Inaccurate Ingredient Labels are Threatening the Lives of our Children and Manufacturers Must be Held Accountable!
As a primary mission of ELL, our organization is contacting government representatives to demonstrate how the federal Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 greatly flawed in that it does not adequately monitor and enforce penalties upon those manufacturers not currently adhering to the law. As a result, some manufacturers are responsible for putting our allergenic children’s lives at risk.
We have personally encountered this situation with a manufacturer named Tofutti. Following my son’s near fatal reaction to a Tofutti product, we contacted the manufacturer numerous times to discuss this issue and to share an independent laboratory report (by University of Nebraska) that confirmed the inclusion of milk protein in its Tofutti Cutie frozen dessert. This manufacturer refused to speak to us once it learned of our findings and to-date has not shared the results of its internal investigations. There has been no confirmation that any steps have been taken by Tofutti to ensure that cross-contamination with milk will not occur again in its manufacturing.
All US consumers should be guaranteed safety in the foods they consume. It is a manufacturer’s responsibility to accurately communicate the ingredients in its product. Whether it be for health concerns (diabetes, allergies, etc.), religious or personal convictions, consumers have a right to accurate ingredient information.
Help spread the word to our lawmakers and demand enforcement of the food labelling laws!
